In spring, plant onion sets in rows in any well drained soil in full sun. It is important that the soil does not become waterlogged so incorporate some well rotted manure or garden compost to improve drainage and feed the soil. On particularly heavy soils, try growing onion sets in raised beds. Plant each bulb with the pointed end facing upwards so that the tips are just protruding through the soil surface. Onions should be spaced 10cm (4") apart, leaving 30cm (12") between each row.
Weed rows of onions regularly. Onion sets are undemanding and will only require watering during particularly dry periods. Harvest onions in late June and July, a week or two after the leaves begin to turn yellow. Choose a dry day to loosen them from the ground with a fork. Leave them on the soil surface for a day or two until they have fully dried in the sun. Once dry, remove the top foliage and store them in a well ventilated, dry position. Bulbs can be stored in good conditions for up to 2 months.
