Make a statement with this collection of large and colourful flowering Dahlias, which have blooms measuring up to 25cm (10") in diameter! The aptly named 'Lavish Giants Collection' comprises the fiery and decorative 'Akita', the huge dinner-plate double white and purple flowered 'Ferncliff Illusion', the sunny 'Grand Prix' and beautiful 'Lavender Ruffles' varieties as well as the giant pink 'Emory Paul', which won the prestigious RHS People's Choice Award for bedding Dahlia in 2014. The effect is a vivid explosion of colour which is sure to captivate. Suitable for borders and patio containers, these plants are conveniently supplied as tubers, ready to be planted in spring and flower in the summer and autumn. Plant dahlia tubers outdoors in borders and patio containers during april after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and 60cm (25") apart. Water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.

Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. Pinch out the growing tip of each young stem to encourage bushier growth and more flowers. Taller varieties may require staking with garden canes to support their tall stems. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. With the first autumn frosts, remove tubers from their positions and trim away old stems to 5cm above the tuber. Clean any remaining soil from the tubers and store over winter in peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position. Replant Dahlia tubers the following spring for another spectacular display!
