Native to Australia, Dicksonia antarctica is hardy to around -5°C (23°F) and thrives in the relatively mild, wet climate of the UK. Plant Dicksonia antarctica plants in reliably moist, rich fertile, preferably acid soil. Choose a damp sheltered position in dappled or semi shade. A woodland situation is ideal. Alternatively, plant Tree Ferns in containers of humus rich soil that can be moved outdoors in summer and returned to a greenhouse or conservatory over winter.

Tree Ferns originate from the humid forests of Australia where they enjoy high levels of rainfall. When growing Tree Ferns it is recommended that the entire crown and stem be sprayed with water regularly, even after establishment. A liquid fertiliser can be applied in the same way from the second year after planting. During hot weather the trunk should be watered daily to maintain adequate moisture levels.

Dicksonia antarctica is hardy to -5C (23F). To protect it from particularly cold winter weather, pack the crown with straw in late autumn before tying up the fronds and wrapping the entire plant and stem with horticultural fleece. Unwrap it once or twice throughout winter to turn the straw and discourage mould.
