Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
A very attractive dwarf almond tree featuring a profusion of pretty pink blossom in spring. Almond 'Garden Prince' has been grafted on to VVA1 rootstock to form a dwarf fruit tree which makes an ideal feature for the patio! This fully hardy tree needs mild winters and warm, dry summers to produce a crop in September. Sweet Almonds flower early in the spring when few pollinating insects are around so will need pollinating by hand to set a good crop. Height and spread: 1.2m (4'). Supplied as bare root.

Although perfectly hardy, sweet almond trees need a frost free winter and warm dry summer to produce a crop. Plant patio almond trees in large containers with at least 60cm (24") diameter, using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Alternatively, plant sweet almonds in well drained, sunny, sheltered borders that have been enriched with well rotted manure or garden compost. Fruit trees should be fastened to a stake to prevent them from rocking in windy weather. Drive the stake into the ground prior to planting. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball of the tree. Plant almond trees at the same soil level as they were in their original pots and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well. Place almonds in containers in a warm sheltered spot in full sun.

Feed and water patio almond trees regularly throughout the summer. Weed around the base of fruit trees regularly and if growing in the ground, keep grass and weeds clear from within a 30cm (12") radius of the tree. Each spring apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of almond trees grown directly in borders. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Top dress almond trees in containers with a slow-release fruit fertiliser each spring. To improve fruiting, move containerised sweet almonds to a cool, bright, frost-free position in the autumn, keeping the compost just moist over winter. Almond blossom can be damaged by frost so is best protected with horticultural fleece if grown outside.

Mini almond trees require only light pruning in summer to keep their shape, removing any damaged or crowded branches. Avoid pruning almond trees in winter or spring as this puts them at risk of fungal infections.
