Caution: irritant to skin and eyes. The fragile Crown Imperial bulbs should be carefully planted in September and October. Choose a position in full sun. Fritillaria imperialis prefers a fertile, free draining soil. The bulbs are particularly susceptible to rotting in wet soils so add plenty of grit and a little well rotted manure or compost prior to planting. Plant bulbs at a depth of 12cm (5") and 20cm (10") apart. Water well to settle the soil.
After flowering allow the foliage die back naturally. When leaves and stems have yellowed, cut them back to ground level.
