Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
Hollyhock 'New Dawn' is the striking result of a cross between the traditional cottage garden favourite 'Alcea rosea' with the relatively rare 'Alcea rugosa' from Russia. Alluring blooms in sunrise shades of warm red and yellow are carried upon tall stems all summer. A perfect addition for the back of summer borders. Height: 250cm (98"). Spread: 60cm (24"). Bareroot plants supplied.

Culinary information: Some parts of these flowers are edible. Click here for more details about edible flowers.

Plant hollyhock bareroots at the earliest opportunity following delivery. Should soil conditions prevent planting directly into borders (if soil is frozen or waterlogged), hollyhocks should be potted up, watered sparingly and grown on in a cool position. Choose a sunny position that is sheltered from strong winds, on well drained soil. Work some compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the bareroot with its roots spread out and deep enough that the crown of the plant is just a few cm below soil level. Backfill the hole with soil and firm the hollyhock plant in gently. Leave a slight depression around the plant - this will help to direct water towards the roots. Water well to settle the soil.
Support the tall hollyhock flower stems with garden canes if necessary. In autumn, remove old foliage and faded flower stems. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the plant.
