Hollyhock
Alcea rosea
Magnificent spires of bloom in a riot of carnival colours! This cottage garden favourite is perfect for adding height and stately grandeur to the back of summer borders. This popular hardy perennial is also highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Height: 2m (78"). Spread: 60cm (24"). Supplied in 5cm pots.
Repot hollyhock plants into 9cm pots and grow them on in frost free conditions. When plants are fully rooted into their pots, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days, and transplant into sunny borders. Grow hollyhocks in a sheltered position away from strong winds. Plant in full sun, on fertile, well drained soil.
Feed and water regularly until plants are established. Support the tall hollyhock flower stems with garden canes if necessary. In autumn, remove old foliage and faded hollyhock flower stems, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant.
