On delivery, please plant bareroot perennials at the earliest opportunity. Should soil conditions prevent planting directly into borders (if soil is frozen or waterlogged), pot up bareroots, water sparingly and grow on in a cool position. Choose a sunny position in well drained soil. Work some compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the bareroot with its roots spread out and deep enough that the crown of the plant is just a few cm below soil level. Backfill the hole with soil and firm plant in gently. Leave a slight depression around the plant - this will help to direct water towards the roots. Water well to settle the soil.
In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure to the base of the plant. Lift and divide hardy perennials in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.

    Unlike Kathleen Taylor I am very disappointed with these bare root plants. When I bought bare root perennials from another company they had budding stalks. These were more like root cuttings that had just started sprouting. Some had no growth at all, 2 of the packs were short, and the Liatris looked like dormant bulbs, no roots or growth. On the strength of this product I wont be buying from Van Meuwen again. Colin Campbell Van Meuwen says: We're sorry you were disappointed with your order.     These have just arrived and I am well impressed. You posted them in Guernsey on Thursday and on Saturday morning they were on my doorstep! I have ordered bare rooted plants before from other companies and they just like like brown twigs but these (all 40 of them) have signs of life with shoots all over the place - I'm suprised they fitted in the box! All in all a brilliant product and brilliant service. Thanks Van Meuwen.
