Native to south-east Asia, this tender perennial brings an exotic feel to containers. The Siam Tulip bears its cone-like, tropical blooms on stiff flower spikes above clumps of oblong foliage. Curcuma alismatifolia 'Pink' is perfect for growing in a dappled or semi-shaded spot of the patio during the summer months. Move it to a warm greenhouse or conservatory with a minimum temperature of 12C (54F) over winter and it will reward you with more fabulous blooms the following year. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 45cm (18"). Supplied as rhizomes.

Pot up and grow Curcuma plants on in warm, frost-free conditions until they are well grown. Once all risk of frost has passed, transplant them into their final positions in patio containers in a warm sheltered spot outdoors, or in a greenhouse or conservatory. Grow Siam Tulip plants in reliably moist soil in dappled or semi shade, with protection from strong sunlight. Use a loam based compost such as John Innes No. 2 when planting into containers.

Feed monthly and water freely throughout the growing season. Move Curcuma plants to a warm, bright position for the winter, maintaining a minimum temperature of 12C (54F). Reduce watering so that Siam Tulip plants are almost dry throughout the winter months. Pot bound plants may be repotted in spring before active growth resumes.
