This unusual perennial sunflower produces more and more blooms as its stem gets higher. The 7cm (3") wide, golden yellow blooms of Helianthus maximiliani appear all the way up the stem in a tower of colour. Maximilian sunflowers have a sweet chocolate fragrance and make lovely cut flowers. Perfect for growing alongside hollyhocks at the back of cottage garden borders. Height: 200cm (79"). Giant Fragrant Cowslip

Primula florindae (Tibetan Cowslip)

It's rather like an allium or a yellow agapanthus with its tall umbels of banana yellow blooms, this giant variety of cowslip makes a bright display, especially in shadier, damp areas of the garden, from July to September. With a subtle aroma of nutmeg they're a useful cut flower plant for an indoor vase. Ht. 90cm. Supplied in 5cm pots. More info

Also known as the Torch Lily, this easy, reliable perennial is an old favourite for herbaceous borders. This cultivar of golden marguerite bears masses of sunny lemon coloured daisy flowers on branching stems that literally smother the plant. The aromatic leaves form mounds of finely dissected foliage which are particularly attractive at the front of sunny borders.
