Caution: Harmful if eaten. Choose a sunny position in a damp border or bog garden. Ideally, Cephalanthus prefers a fertile, neutral to acid soil which remains reliably moist. If your soil is alkaline then it is best grown in a container. When growing in patio containers, use a mix of soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3 and ericaceous compost. Repot the shrub at its original soil level and position in full sun.
Feed and water container grown plants frequently. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. As Cephalanthus increases in size it will require repotting into increasingly larger pots.
