Phoenix Palm Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm) For instant impact on your patio and a touch of the exotic, try the Canary Island date palm, winner of an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Architectural, broadly arching leaves consisting of many leaflets are borne gracefully from a stout columnar trunk. These mature plants are supplied at a height of 60-70cm (24-28") ready for an instant display in your garden! Phoenix canariensis is ideal for conservatories and perfect in patio containers which can be moved to a frost-free position over winter. In mild areas the Canary date palm may be grown in sheltered borders outdoors where it will tolerate temperatures down to -8°C (18°F). Height: 1.5m (5') when restricted in containers. Snail Tree Vigna caracalla (Phaeolus caracalla) This evergreen twining climber is a close relative to the runner bean. Grown for its pendants of twisted flowers, like coiled snail shells, up to 5cm (2") across. The fascinating summer flowers are followed by cylindrical green fruits in late autumn. Requiring a minimum temperature of 15°C (59°F), Phaseolus is best grown in a heated greenhouse or conservatory. Alternatively, grow in patio containers that can be moved indoors for the winter.
