This herbaceous perennial naturally grows in shallow water, making it a fantastic addition to bog gardens or pond margins where it can be submerged up to 25cm (10"). Flowering rush produces grassy green leaves which are followed by tall upright stems bearing umbels of pretty pink flowers in late summer. The deliciously fragrant blooms produce an almond-like scent and are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. Butomus umbellatus is also a valuable egg-laying site for dragonflies in the UK. Height: 120cm (47"). Spread: 45cm (18"). Supplied in 9cm pots.

Plant flowering rush in rich mud at pond margins, or in any reliably moist or boggy soil in full sun. Plant at the same level as the plant was in its pot. Alternatively plant Butomus umbellatus in aquatic baskets filled with aquatic or heavy garden soil. Push some aquatic fertiliser pellets into the soil to feed the plant. Top the container with a layer of gravel to prevent the soil washing away. Gently lower containers into the water and position them on supports such as bricks so that they sit up to 25cm (10") below the surface of the water.

Remove yellowing leaves and faded Butomus flowers regularly. In early spring, lift and divide mature plants to maintain free flowering. Repot young portions of the crown and discard the older portions.
