This beautiful marginal pond plant produces clumps of attractive, shapely leaves, followed by elegant spikes of purple flowers in late summer. Attractive to bees and butterflies, this RHS AGM variety is also a valuable egg-laying site for dragonflies in the UK. With their neat habit and tall flower stems, Pickerel Hyacinths are ideal planted at the margins of a pond in shallow water, submerged up to 12cm (5"). Pontederia cordata can also be grown in large water-filled containers on the patio for an interesting patio feature. Height: 1m (3'). Spread: 60cm (24"). Supplied in 9cm pots.

Plant pickerel weed in mud at pond margins, in a full sun position. Plant at the same level as the plant was in its pot. Alternatively plant Pontederia cordata in aquatic baskets filled with aquatic or heavy garden soil. Push some aquatic fertiliser pellets into the soil to feed the plant. Top the container with a layer of gravel to prevent the soil washing away. Gently lower containers into the water and position them on supports such as bricks so that they sit up to 12cm (4”) below the surface of the water. If growing pickerel weed in pots, position the container in a sheltered, sunny position for the best flowering.

Remove yellowing leaves and faded pickerel flowers regularly. Cut back all leaf stems in autumn to prevent debris building up in the pond. Pontederia cordata can be slow to re-appear in spring. In late spring, lift and divide mature pickerel plants to maintain free flowering. Repot young portions of the crown and discard the older portions. In the winter, protect water plants in pots by moving them to a sheltered position against a house wall, or placing in a cool greenhouse to prevent the water freezing through.
