Grow grape vines in a sunny position in well-drained soil which has had plenty of well-rotted manure or compost incorporated. Although fully hardy, grape vines produce the best crops in a sheltered position against a south-facing wall. Prior to planting, construct a support for the twining stems using sturdy 1.8m (6’) wooden posts with wires stretched horizontally between them at a distance of 30cm (12") apart. If growing grape vines on a wall, use screw-in vine eyes to attach wires to the wall. Plant grape vines against their support 1.2m (4’) apart. After planting, cut back the main stem to the height of the lowest support wire.
