Blueberry plants make superb patio specimens, bearing white flowers in spring, followed by blue-grey fruits in summer and fiery red foliage in autumn. These compact shrubs prefer an acid soil so if your soil is neutral or alkaline grow blueberries in large patio containers filled with a mixture of ericaceous compost and soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
