Hardy Perennial

Ideal For: Border, Containers, Cut Flower

Flowers: June, July, August, September, October

Peruvian Lily.

Exotic blooms produced over an exceptionally long period make Alstroemeria flowers excellent for cutting. Red Lion is a particularly attractive variety of Peruvian Lily with bronze freckled white petals edged in soft red. Equally at home in patio containers or planted in herbaceous borders, this hardy perennial will provide a constant source of fresh blooms for your home, year after year. Height: 70cm (30”). Size 1 bareroot plants supplied.

How to Grow
Alstroemeria Red Lion

On delivery of your bareroot Alstroemeria plants please plant them at the earliest opportunity. Should soil conditions prevent planting directly into borders (if soil is frozen or waterlogged), bareroots should be potted up, watered sparingly and grown on in a cool position for planting out at a later date.
Choose a sunny or semi shaded position in moist, well drained soil and work some well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the bareroot with its roots spread out and deep enough that the crown of the plant is just a few cm below soil level. Backfill the hole with soil and firm the plant in gently. Leave a slight depression around the plant – this will help to direct water towards the roots.
Water well to settle the soil.
Alternatively, grow Alstroemeria in containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Aftercare
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season.
Remove faded flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced.
In autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure to the base of the plant.
Lift and divide clumps of Peruvian Lily in autumn every third year to maintain their vigour.

Caution: Irritant to skin and eyes.
