Ideal For:
Border, Greenhouse, Pot Plant
Flowers:
July, August
Delicate, fragrant, gleaming white flowers. Habenaria radiata are an astonishing sight! Each slender stem bears 3 to 4 blooms which persist for up to 4 weeks, resembling an Egret in flight. Despite its petite proportions of only 30cm (12”) tall, this beautiful miniature orchid is hardy to -6°C (21°F) so it will even grow in borders outdoors!
How to Grow
Orchid White Egret - Habenaria Radiata
- Tubers are naturally small (about the size of a peanut).
- Pot up individually into 3cm pots, or group all 4 tubers together in a 10cm container.
- Plant tubers in specialist orchid compost approximately 2.5cm (1”) deep. (Tubers have a small dark eye at one end where the new shoot will grow from. Plant this end facing upwards.)
- Habenaria radiata will grow happily on a windowsill or in a cool greenhouse. Just make sure that these exquisite beauties are protected from strong sunlight at all times. Once established they can even be planted into shady borders outside with winter protection.
- Aftercare
- In late spring, when the first shoots appear, increase watering and feed regularly throughout the growing season.
- Decrease watering in the autumn as the foliage dies back.
- Place tubers in a cool position (0°-5°C) for the winter and keep the compost just moist until the new shoots appear the following spring.
