Banana
Musa basjoo
The Japanese Banana plant makes an outstanding specimen for a really exotic focal point. Grown for its lush paddle shaped foliage, this large herbaceous perennial sometimes produces creamy yellow flowers which are followed by clusters of tiny bananas. Unfortunately the fruit contain dozens of small black seeds, making them inedible. Musa Basjoo is the hardiest banana for growing in the UK; however it is unlikely to survive our winters outdoors except in the mildest areas. Height: 5m (15'). Spread: 4m (12'). Supplied in a 7cm pot.
Grow banana plants in conservatories and greenhouses, or in patio containers that can be moved to a frost free position during winter. Plant them in large containers of soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Water well and position in frost free conditions in bright light. In mild areas, bananas may be planted in sunny borders outdoors with shelter from hot sun and strong winds. Bananas require a rich fertile, moisture retentive soil, so incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the ground prior to planting. When growing banana plants outdoors in the UK, they should be treated as an annual as they are not fully hardy.
Stand containers of bananas outside in a bright position from May to September. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. Move plants indoors between October and April to a bright, frost free position away from cold draughts and radiators. Water sparingly in winter but do not let the soil dry out completely. Repot into progressively larger containers as the plant increases in size.
