Chimonanthus praecox
Wintersweet
Wonderfully fragrant, waxy, yellow flowers drip from bare woody stems. On the darkest of winter days, this beautiful specimen plant is in full bloom while most other plants lie dormant! An elegant winter flowering shrub for borders, or when grown against a house wall, where its exquisite perfume can be fully appreciated. Height: 4m (12') Spread: 3m (10') Supplied in a 9cm pot.
Grow Chimonanthus in borders or against walls in any fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Although Wintersweet is hardy, the young stems can be damaged by hard frosts. Choose a sheltered position to protect the plant. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its pot. Firm the soil around the rootball and water well.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants become established. Prune Wintersweet in spring, immediately after flowering. Remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant. After pruning, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant.
