When growing eucalyptus in patio containers, use a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in full sun. Alternatively, plant eucalyptus trees directly into borders in any free draining soil. Feed and water regularly until plant is established. Once established, eucalyptus is reasonably drought tolerant and will require less attention. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. Move container grown plants to a frost free position over winter. In mild areas eucalyptus citriodora may be overwintered in borders if grown in a sheltered position and offered some winter protection. Eucalyptus will need regular pruning in early spring to restrict its vigorous growth.
