Hydrangea macrophylla 'Glowing Embers' is a compact Hydrangea variety that is ideal for small gardens and outdoor spaces such as roof gardens. This Hydrangea will produce two flushes of flowers throughout the summer months, and as with all Hydrangeas, is one of the last of the garden plants to lose their flowers in the autumn. 'Glowing Embers' has slightly ruffled blue petals when grown in acidic soil and pink petals when grown in alkaline soil. In late autumn the flowers turn a deep maroon colour. Even in early winter the flower heads keep their shape as they die off, and they can look great on frosty mornings. Once pruned back the Hydrangea will flower again the following year. Height and spread: 1m (39").

When growing hydrangeas, choose a sunny or semi shaded spot that is sheltered from cold winter winds. Plant in borders in rich moist, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Alternatively plant hydrangea in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Feed and water container grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants. Leave faded hydrangea flower heads in place until new buds swell the following spring. These will help protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune stems in spring, removing any rubbing, damaged or diseased stems and reducing stems to maintain a permanent woody framework.
