Grow lilac in borders in moist, free draining, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. Lilac enjoys a rich fertile soil, so dig in plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting. Alternatively, plant lilac in large patio containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Water well after planting.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, Lilac plants require only occasional attention. Deadhead lilac flowers as they fade. Lilacs need little pruning except the occasional removal of misplaced or damaged stems in late winter or early spring.
