Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a moist, well drained acid to neutral soil that is high in organic matter. If you don't have acid soil, incorporate plenty of ericaceous compost into your border prior to planting. Plant bareroot Magnolias at the same depth as they were previously planted. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Magnolia plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems.

3rd time unlucky

The first tree I was sent had purple flowers so clearly the wrong tree. This was replaced a year later free of charge by VM but the replacement had a purple bud which fell off before it opened. Not wanting to wait another year for it to be replaced I purchased a third tree. This one arrived with buds on it but nothing has happened since then, no leaves, nothing. I've contacted VM again but I think they're ignoring me now. Very disappointed. I think I'll be taking my custom elsewhere.
