Pot up silk tree plants and grow them on in a cool, bright position until large enough to plant outside. Prior to transplanting, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant albizia in a sheltered position in any well drained soil in full sun. Albizia 'Summer Chocolate' is hardy down to -5°C (23°F). In particularly cold areas, it is best grown in a cool conservatory or planted in a patio container that can be moved to a sheltered position over winter.
Prune silk trees in winter or early spring, reducing the stems to fit the available space, and removing any damaged, crossing or wayward branches entirely. Albizia may be successfully wall trained. During the first few years prune to achieve a permanent framework of stems. Thereafter the stems of wall trained albizia can be reduced annually to within 4 buds from the permanent framework.
