Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo'(Ninebark) This stylish deciduous shrub is mainly grown for its beautiful rich purple foliage. Corymbs of dainty white flowers with a hint of pink appear along arching branches in early summer, making a striking contrast to the dark foliage. Distinctive, glossy red seed heads follow, persisting well into autumn where they gradually fade to brown. When plants reach maturity the bark peels away in layers giving rise to the common name 'ninebark'.
