Arbutus unedo 'Compacta' forms a neat evergreen shrub or small tree that can be easily grown in a sheltered border or container. The small, lantern-shaped autumn flowers are followed by rounded scarlet red fruits that take a full year to ripen - so fruits and flowers can often be seen on the plant at the same time! Although edible, the fruits of the Strawberry Tree have a sharp aftertaste, so they best made into jams and preserves for a sweeter Guava-like flavour. Height and spread: 150cm (59").
