Acer palmatum 'Amagi Shigure'

The foliage colour of this rare Acer is nothing less than extraordinary. Not only is the changing seasonal colour spectacular but ‘Amagi Shigure’ is also what is known as a ‘Reticulated Acer’. This refers to the tracery of darker veins which form an intricate, net-like pattern against the evolving foliage colour. In spring, the deeply-lobed leaves emerge a shocking fuchsia-pink – surely one of the pinkest of any Acer available. The pink is accented with dark purple veining and the leaves often exhibit a metal sheen. The foliage colour continues to work through a kaleidoscope of tones, transitioning through darker reds and emerald green in late summer before developing warm carmine/orange tones in the autumn. The exact shades will depend upon situation, with shadier areas encouraging whitish-pink marbling later in the season. Acer ‘Amagi Shigure’ makes a fabulous container feature or specimen tree for the open ground. It is best grown in a site with protection from the afternoon sun. Maximum height and spread: 2.5-3m (8-10ft).
