A ‘Strap-leaved’ Acer, Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ bears foliage with long, finger-like lobes that are especially elegant. Wine-red foliage in the spring, turning brighter red in summer, on purple-red leaf stalks. The leaves turn brilliant orange/red in the autumn before falling. Acer palmatum ‘Enkan’ is similar to the popular variety, ‘Red Pygmy’, but holds its colour better through summer. A beautiful dwarf acer planted in a large tub, where it will add interest and architecture to a semi-shaded spot on a patio. Alternatively, use it as a border feature in a partially shaded position. Height: 3m (10ft). Spread: 2m (6.5ft).

Grow Acers in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade. It's important to give plants shelter from strong winds which can scorch the leaves.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
