Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Almond 'Princess' is a self-fertile variety grown for its breathtaking pale pink blossom as much as its high-quality, sweet-tasting nuts. Clouds of blossom in early spring make this a beautiful specimen tree, whilst the nuts can be eaten straight from the tree or used in baking and desserts. Prunus dulcis 'Princess' has long, pointed leaves that have some resistance to leaf curl. It will thrive in a sunny, sheltered spot that offers some protection from late frosts. Nuts are ready to harvest from late September. Height and spread: 5m (16ft).

1 x 10 Litre Potted Tree (St Julien A Rootstock) (KF0815)

Although perfectly hardy, almond trees require a frost free winter and a warm dry summer in order to produce a crop. Grow almond trees in a sheltered, sunny position in any well drained, neutral soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil, and drive a stake into the planting hole to support the tree once it is planted. Plant almonds at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and use a tree tie to fasten the tree to the stake.

Fruit and nut trees do not suffer weed competition well so keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. Remove any suckers at ground level in spring, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the tree. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Almond blossom is particularly susceptible to frost and may require protecting by a layer of fleece.

Like all members of the Prunus family, the almond tree should only be pruned in summer to avoid the risk of bacterial infection. Almonds fruit on one year old wood. They require little pruning other than the occasional removal of any damaged or crowded branches. However should fruits become bitter, then more frequent pruning is required to encourage new leaf growth which will help to dissipate the chemicals which cause this bitterness, thereby preventing the fruits becoming bitter.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
