Description How to Grow More Info Delivery Video
This compact nut tree is well worth growing for the blooms alone! A showy display of pale pink spring blossom is followed by soft shelled, sweet almonds that can be harvested from late August. Almond 'Robijn' is reassuringly hardy, but will need a frost free winter and a warm dry summer in order to produce a crop. In such conditions, you can look forward to your first harvest just 3 years from planting. This modern variety shows good resistance to peach leaf curl. Grafted onto a semi dwarfing 'St Julian' rootstock, Almond 'Robijn' remains neat and compact, forming a medium sized spreading tree that makes a lovely patio centrepiece. Although self fertile, pollination can be greatly improved if a second almond tree is planted close by. This variety is grafted onto a peach rootstock. It is recommended to avoid planting near peaches as hybridisation may occur resulting in bitter nuts. Height and spread: 3.5m (11').

Feed and water patio almond trees regularly throughout the summer. Weed around the base of fruit trees regularly and if growing in the ground, keep grass and weeds clear from within a 30cm (12”) radius of the tree. Each spring apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of almond trees grown directly in borders. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Top dress almond trees in containers with a slow-release fruit fertiliser each spring. To improve fruiting, move containerised sweet almonds to a cool, bright, frost-free position in the autumn, keeping the compost just moist over winter. Almond blossom can be damaged by frost so is best protected with horticultural fleece if grown outside. Mini almond trees require only light pruning in summer to keep their shape, removing any damaged or crowded branches. Avoid pruning almond trees in winter or spring as this puts them at risk of fungal infections.
Although perfectly hardy, sweet almond trees need a frost free winter and warm dry summer to produce a crop. Plant patio almond trees in large containers with at least 60cm (24") diameter, using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Alternatively, plant sweet almonds in well drained, sunny, sheltered borders that have been enriched with well rotted manure or garden compost. Fruit trees should be fastened to a stake to prevent them from rocking in windy weather. Drive the stake into the ground prior to planting. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball of the tree. Plant almond trees at the same soil level as they were in their original pots and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well. Place almonds in containers in a warm sheltered spot in full sun.
