Starry clusters of elegant pale blue Amsonia flowers appear from spring to midsummer. This rarely seen perennial deserves better recognition in gardens for its long flowering period and reliable performance year after year. Amsonia tabernaemontana grows happily in sun or dappled shade and copes well with drought. An attractive and unusual addition to garden borders and woodland gardens. Height: 90cm (35"). Spread: 45cm (18").

1 Packet (30 Seeds) (26216)

Sow Amsonia seeds from February to July on the surface of a peat/sand mix seed compost and gently firm down. Keep the soil damp but not wet and do not exclude light. Place in a propagator or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag at a temperature of at 13-15C (55-60F) for 2-3 weeks. Move to a refrigerator (not freezer) for 3-6 weeks, after which return the tray to the recommended germination temperature. Keep the compost moist at all times. Germination can be very slow taking from 30-365 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 7cm (3") pots and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to move outdoors. Plant Amsonia at a distance of 30cm (12") apart, in any well drained soil in sun or dappled shade.

Amsonia plants are slow growing but large clumps may be divided in spring when necessary. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
