Description How to Grow More Info Delivery Reviews

It’s easy to see why Ascelpias is commonly known as the Butterfly Flower! The nectar rich flowers are a magnet for insects in summer. This upright, hardy perennial bears flat-topped clusters of flowers at the tips of it tall stems. The curious seedpods that follow can be dried to add interest to dried flower displays. Plant our Asclepias Collection in sunny herbaceous borders or dotted around a wildlife area. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 60cm (24").

  • Collection comprises:
  • Asclepias tuberosa - Showy and ostentatious, the upright stems are topped with clusters of golden-orange blooms.
  • Asclepias incarnata 'Cinderella' - Upright stems are cloaked in elegant, slender foliage and topped with particularly dense clusters of pink blooms.
  • Asclepias incarnata 'Ice Ballet' - Dense clusters of pristine white blooms, from mid-summer to autumn.
  • Asclepias incarnata 'Soulmate' - A profusion of deep-pink flowers with delicate white centres, and a light vanilla fragrance.

Grow Asclepias plants in sunny borders in fertile, well drained soil. Once established common milkweed is reasonably drought tolerant and will survive dry conditions well. Caution: Contact with the milky sap may irritate skin.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until milkweed plants are fully established. Once established they require little maintenance. Deadhead the first flush of blooms when they fade to promote a second flush of Asclepias flowers. Leave the faded flower heads of any subsequent blooms intact at the end of summer to enjoy an attractive autumn seed head display. When the first frosts blacken the stems, cut them down to ground level. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Asclepias in spring.
