Basil 'Sweet Green' (Seeds)

• Sow indoors February to June, on the surface of a good freedraining seed compost. Cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite.
• Place in a propagator or seal containers in a polythene bag and keep at 20-25°C (68-77F) until after germination, which usually takes 2-3 weeks. Do not exclude daylight as this helps germination.
• Keep compost on the dry side, water lightly as seedlings emerge.
• Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow on in cooler conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart.
• Tear leaves rather than chop, to retain the aroma. Leaves can be preserved by freezing or steeping in oil.
