Blackthorn is well loved by british wildlife for the cover it provides and the fruit is appreciated too - not forgetting it can be used jams, jellies and sloe gin! Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 25cm (10"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

Plant Blackthorn in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Ideally grown in full sun.
Water regularly until fully established. Blackthorn require little aftercare. Simply remove any diseased, damaged or crossing shoots to maintain a healthy framework. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plants in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stems.
