If you're struggling to grow orchids then give our Bletilla Patio Collection a go. This easy growing orchid is as tough as it is beautiful. Bletilla will fill your garden with delicate blooms from spring through to early summer. This hardy perennial prefers dappled shade and once established are fairly drought tolerant. This durable, low maintenace orchid will give you the beauty of a house plant in your own back garden.

Grow Bletilla in humus-rich, fertile soil in dappled shade. Although hardy, it will be most successful in a sheltered site, avoiding frost pockets and strong sunlight. Tubers require shallow planting of just 2cm below soil level. In particularly cold areas, grow it in a container which can be moved to a cool, frost free position over winter.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

Feed and water regularly when plants are in active growth. In autumn, apply a dry mulch of leaf mould, bark chips or straw to protect the tubers from cold winter weather. Move containers of Hyacinth Orchids to a cold conservatory or unheated greenhouse, keeping the compost barely while plants remain dormant.
