Sowing Months Harvest Months

1 packet (250 cabbage seeds) (TKA54031)

  • Sow outdoors from July to August, to overwinter. Prepare seed bed by raking to a fine tilth and add plenty of compost or manure, sow 13mm (1/2in) deep, in drills 23cm (9in) apart.
  • Transplant seedlings when they are large enough to handle, about 5 weeks after sowing, to 50cm (20in) apart each way.
  • Water regularly, especially in dry periods. Hoe between plants and use a protective netting to keep off birds and insects.
  • Can also be sown indoors in March for planting out April/ May. Sow seed 13mm (1/2in) deep in free-draining compost in tray or modules. Cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 20-25°C (68-77F) until after germination which takes 4-7 days. Plant out when plants have 2-3 true leaves. Acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days, plant into moist, rich, well-drained soil in full sun, 50cm (20in) apart.
