  • Sow outdoors from April to mid-June. Prepare seed bed by raking to a fine tilth and add plenty of compost or manure, sow 1cm (1/2in) deep, in drills 23cm (9in) apart.
  • Transplant seedlings when they are large enough to handle, about 5 weeks after sowing, to 38cm (15in) apart each way.
  • Water regularly, especially in dry periods. Hoe between plants as required.
  • Can also be sown into containers, under glass and transplanted into pots or trays when large enough to handle. Grow-on in a coldframe until large enough for transplanting into their final positions.
  • Cabbages are an excellent source of pro-vitamin A, Vitamin C and the B vitamins. Take care not to over-cook cabbage.
