A refined and popular specimen shrub, prized for its glossy evergreen foliage and profusion of beautiful cup shaped flowers in spring. Its slow growth makes Camellia ideal for growing in containers, and once established it is undemanding, requiring little maintenance. The elegant Camellia blooms also make charming cut flowers. How to plant trees and shrubs

1 Plant (64570)

Water regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed occasionally with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds and strong early morning sunlight, as this may cause the buds to drop in early spring.Border grown plants will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
Camellia plants require an acid soil. If you don't have acid soil, simply plant them in patio containers. When growing Camellia in patio containers, use a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in dappled or semi shade. Alternatively, if you are gardening on acid soil, plant Camellia standards directly into borders in a sheltered, shaded position in moist, well drained soil.
