Description How to Grow Delivery

Sweet Chestnut trees are magnificent specimens for very large gardens, although for smaller gardens, their size can be restricted by coppicing or growing in a Root Control Bag. They are fast-growing trees with a dense, irregular crown clothed in elongated, glossy green leaves, around 20cm long, with strongly serrated edges. In autumn the leaves turn yellow. Decorative catkins appear in summer followed by spiny chestnuts in October. Mature trees twist on their axis, creating extraordinarily beautiful trunks with deeply furrowed bark.

This Marron-type Chestnut is grown specifically for its nuts due to their generous size and sweet flavour. A variety originating from Italy, it is associated with the town of Marradi in rural Tuscany which is famous for the excellence of its chestnuts which cover the hills around the town. Castanea sativa ‘Marradi’ is a vigorous clone with high yields of medium-size fruits which are easy to peel and preserve well. It is excellent for fresh consumption and for candying. This medium-late variety is ready to harvest mid-October. Nuts are produced from around the 5th year after planting.

Height and spread after 10 years: 5m (16ft). Mature height and spread: 20m + (65ft).

Please note: This Sweet Chesnut cannot self pollinate – two trees are required for pollination.

The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

1 x 12 Litre Potted Plant (Half Standard) (KF3102)

Grow in sandy, well-drained acidic soil. Sweet Chestnuts will not succeed in heavy clays or waterlogged ground. Choose a site in full sun which is sheltered from the prevailing wind. Stake the tree on planting. Water it well during the first year, mulch around the base of the tree and remove all competing weeds and grass around the tree allowing at least 1m diameter to remain clear. Trees are drought resistant once established but care should be taken whilst the tree is young to water it during especially dry periods. Please note: This Sweet Chesnut cannot self pollinate – two trees are required for pollination.
