Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
A perfect choice for small gardens, this slow-growing deciduous tree or large shrub bears heart-shaped, red-purple leaves, which age to vibrant shades of orange and red in autumn. If grown in a warm and sheltered spot, this variety will produce a smattering of delightful pink-purple, pea-like flowers in the spring, which are borne along the bare branches before the leaves. A magnificent specimen tree for small gardens, Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' can also be grown as a large shrub. This handsome RHS AGM variety is a real talking point and makes a lively contrast to lime green foliage plants. Height and spread: 3m (10'). Supplied as bare root.

Culinary information: The flowers have a significantly higher vitamin content than most common fruits and vegetables, including oranges. The fresh buds have a not unpleasant sour bite and can also be pickled for later use with spring greens for example. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow Cercis canadensis in rich fertile, moist, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun or dappled shade. Incorporate plenty of organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, into your border prior to planting. Plant bareroot Cercis at the same depth as it was previously planted. Backfill the planting hole, firm in and water well to settle the soil.
Water Eastern Redbud trees regularly throughout the growing season until plants are fully established. Cercis trees naturally form a pleasing, often multi-stemmed tree. Little pruning is needed except to remove any damaged or poorly placed branches in late winter if necessary. Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' can also be grown as a large shrub, which encourages attractive, large leaves but sacrifices flowering. Once plants are established, cut back all stems to 60-90cm (24-35") from the ground in late winter or early spring. Carry this out every other year to give the plant time to recover. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant, taking care not to mound it up against the trunk.
