A very pretty shrub for spring colour, Chaenomeles japonica 'Sargentii' erupts with orange-red flowers just as the leaves emerge in March. The flowers are followed by green apple-like fruits which turn golden as autumn approaches and have a delicate sweet aroma. Although unpalatable raw, the fruits of Japanese quince are tasty when cooked and make a delicious jam. Easy to grow as a ground cover shrub, flowering quince is also perfect for training up sunny walls and fences, where it will provide a colourful backdrop for your spring-flowering bulbs and perennials. Height: 1m (3'). Spread: 2m (6').
