An unusual dwarf conifer with fine, thread-like foliage which emerges bright yellow in spring, turning yellow-green in summer and deepening to gold in autumn/winter. Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Tsatsumi Gold' is very slow-growing, with a rounded habit when young, maturing to pyramidal as it develops a central leader. Growth is somewhat irregular. Perfect for containers, rock gardens and small borders. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height and spread: 1m (39in) in 10 years.

Grow Cypress trees in moist, well drained soil. Chamaecyparis prefers a neutral or acid soil but does tolerate chalky soils well. Choose a position in full sun.

Once established, Cypress trees require virtually no maintenance. When grown as a hedge, prune Chamaecyparis at any time between late spring and early autumn, taking care not to prune into older wood.
