Wild clematis are native to China, and the first garden types were created in Japan. Clematises arrived in European gardens from Japan in the 18th century, and since then hundreds of different cultivars have been created. Clematis 'Ashva' is a late flowering clematis that flowers from July to September. It has violet-purple blooms with distinctive mauve red bars along the length of each sepal. It thrives in a sunny spot, and can be grown in a trellis or obelisk container, or up against a wall or fence. It is very easy to maintain, just prune almost to ground level in the autumn and it will grow back again the following year. Height: 2m (6'). Spread: 1m (39") Pruning group: 3.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow Clematis in sheltered sunny borders in any moist, well drained soil. Clematis plants particularly dislike dry soils so add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve moisture retention in summer. Plant clematis with the top of the rootball positioned 7.5cm (3”) below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Be sure to provide the twining stems with an appropriate support, such as trellis or wires attached to fences and pergolas. Alternatively grow clematis up freestanding plant frames in patio containers. When planting in containers, use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. When pruning a group 3 Clematis remember that it flowers on the current year's growth. In spring, simply cut back all of the previous year's growth to a pair of strong buds at the base of the plant. Afterwards, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
