Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
A Clematis with a difference - this superb diversifolia group Clematis has a scrambling habit rather than climbing, making it perfect for weaving through borders, ground cover or tumbling over raised beds. Aptly named, Clematis 'Blue River' produces an abundance of star-shaped, sky-blue flowers with contrasting white anthers from June to September, followed by fluffy seed heads. Try growing this semi-herbaceous Clematis in borders or tie the stems to a frame or obelisk to add height to your planting scheme. The beautiful blooms also make excellent cut flowers for a vase indoors! Height: 1.2m (4'). Spread: 60cm (24"). Supplied as plug plants. Pruning group 3.

Flowering Months
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. When pruning Clematis 'Blue River' remember that it flowers on the current year’s growth. In spring, simply cut back all of the previous year’s growth to a pair of strong buds at the base of the plant. Afterwards, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
Pot up clematis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant in their final positions. Grow clematis in sunny borders in any moist, well drained soil. Clematis plants particularly dislike dry soils so add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve moisture retention in summer. Plant clematis with the top of the rootball positioned 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Herbaceous clematis do not require supports although can be tied into a frame or obelisk as they grow. Alternatively grow herbaceous clematis in patio containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
