The northernmost naturally occurring palm in the world, this evergreen plant makes an exotic addition to any garden. Dwarf Fan Palm produces large, stiff fan-shaped leaves on stout trunks, and dense panicles of yellow flowers in summer for added interest. Holding an RHS AGM, Chamaerops humilis is ideal for coastal gardens and due to its slow-growing nature works well in patio pots. European Fan Palm will appreciate a sheltered position over winter. Decorative pot not supplied. Height: 2m (6.5'). Spread: 1.5m (5'). Supplied in a 3 litre pot.

Grow dwarf fan palms in containers or sheltered borders in a fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. They tolerate clay soil provided it is well-drained. When growing Chamaerops humilis in patio containers use a loam based compost such as John Innes No.2 or 3. Choose a container only slightly bigger than the pot supplied. Chamaerops plants can be placed outdoors on sunny patios, or in a conservatory or greenhouse. Once established, they will tolerate temperatures down to -12°C in well drained soils.

Feed and water Chamaerops plants regularly. Once established, dwarf fan palms are drought tolerant and plants grown outdoors will require less attention. Palms need little pruning. In spring remove dead or damaged foliage from lower down on the trunk. Wear gloves when pruning to avoid irritation to skin.

In winter, move container-grown plants to a frost-free position and keep the compost on the dry side. In milder areas border-grown European fan palms may be overwintered outdoors. Wrap them with horticultural fleece in their first few winters while they establish. Once established they will tolerate temperatures down to -12°C in well drained soils. Repot container grown plants into increasingly larger pots as they increase in size.
