Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, toxic if eaten.
  • Sow seed on the surface of good free draining compost and cover with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite.
  • Seal container inside a polythene bag and place at 15-20°C (59-68F) until after germination which usually takes 2-4 weeks.
  • Do not exclude daylight as this helps germination.
  • Transplant seedlings, when large enough to handle, into pots. Grow on in cooler conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after risk of frost 60cm (24in) apart. Always ensure good drainage, mulch in autumn. Plants will flower the following year.
  • Can also be sown outdoors, in spring, 1.5mm (1/16in) deep, in rows 30cm (12 in) apart. Later thin out seedlings to 60cm (24in) apart.
Water foxglove plants regularly until fully established. Foxgloves self-seed freely. If seedlings are not wanted, deadhead stems of foxglove flowers as the blooms fade. In autumn, cut back old stems to encourage plenty of new side shoots.
