Unlike other Ginger Lilies, Hedychium aurantiacum is hardy enough to be planted outdoors in the UK! In late summer, this astonishing perennial produces tall flower spikes crowded with flame-like blooms. The broad, lush foliage is the perfect addition to sheltered, exotic gardens. With a little winter protection, this stunning Ginger Lily will resume its display year after year. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 35cm (14"). Supplied as rhizomes.

Grow Ginger Lily plants in sheltered borders in sun or light shade with protection from cold winds. Hedychium aurantiacum requires a reliably moist, fertile, well drained soil. In particularly cold areas, they are best grown in a greenhouse or conservatory, or planted in containers which can be moved to a frost-free position over winter. Use a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Feed and water Hedychium plants regularly. Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing deteriorating leaves and faded Ginger Lily flower stems in Autumn. Ginger Lilies that are grown outdoors should be covered with a dry mulch such as bark chips, to help protect them from cold and wet winter weather. Move patio containers to a frost free position over winter.
