Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
This old Victorian favourite is highly valued for its striking silvery thistle-like leaves adding an architectural touch to your garden. The tall stems of the Cardoon are topped by large buds resembling giant purple thistles that are extremely attractive to bees. Flower heads can be cut for dried flower arrangements or left on the plant for their ornamental seedheads. Height: 150cm (5'). Spread: 120cm (4'). Bareroot plants supplied.

3 Plants (61146)

Feed and water until plants are fully established. The flower heads can be removed after flowering if necessary; however they will make a wonderful architectural display in the autumn if left intact. In late autumn, remove old foliage and apply a mulch of well rotted manure to the base of the plant.
Plant Cynara bareroots at the earliest opportunity following delivery. Should soil conditions prevent planting directly into borders (if soil is frozen or waterlogged), bareroots should be potted up, watered sparingly and grown on in a cool position for planting out at a later date. Choose a sunny position, sheltered from strong winds, in moist, well drained soil. Work some well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the bareroot with its roots spread out, and deep enough that the crown of the plant is just a few cm below soil level. Backfill the hole with soil and firm the plant in gently. Water well to settle the soil.
