Related to the African Violet, these striking Gloxinia produce an abundance of showy, rich purple blooms with white edges, above rosettes of velvety leaves with red flushed undersides. The wide funnel shaped flowers appear over a long flowering period from June to September each year. Gloxinia Kaiser Willhelm requires a minimum temperature of 15C (59F) so it is best grown in containers that can be moved in winter to a warm greenhouse or conservatory, or on a bright windowsill indoors. Height: 20cm (8").

Florists gloxinia are not hardy, so they are best grown in containers that can be moved to a heated greenhouse or conservatory during winter, with a minimum temperature of 15C (59F). Plant gloxinia in spring using a good quality compost. Tubers should be planted shallowly at the soil surface and lightly covered with compost. Place in a bright position with shelter from strong sunlight.

Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season, allowing the compost to dry out very slightly between waterings. Gloxinia plants are best watered by standing the pots in saucers of water, rather than from above, as this may cause them to rot. Deadhead faded gloxinia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. After flowering reduce watering to allow the tubers to dry off as the foliage dies back. Overwinter gloxinia in a warm position.
